Workers at the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) $10 billion Train 7 development have suspended all activities following a protest over withheld tax receipts and the absence of Tax Identification Number (TIN) issuance. The demonstration, centered in Bonny, Rivers State, began last Thursday and persists as employees seek resolution.
The industrial action, organized by welders, fitters, and junior staff, specifically targets the Saipem, Chiyoda, and Daewoo Joint Venture (SCD JV) administration offices. Workers allege unauthorized deductions from their monthly salaries amounting to approximately N150,000 labeled as tax payments, while the company has yet to provide their corresponding TIN documents.
Despite contributing toward achieving 90% completion of the Train 7 project, valued at $10 billion, the affected personnel felt undervalued and ignored. The protest initially involved fitters and welders but soon extended to include junior employees across the project.
Those involved reveal that over the past two years they have consistently endured these substantial monthly deductions. However, an internal audit reportedly discovered discrepancies indicating the funds were never forwarded to the federal tax authorities.
The workforce demands not only the prompt issuance of their TINs but also reimbursement of all unlawfully withheld amounts. They emphasize the impact this has had on their livelihood and trust in corporate governance.
Mr. Harold Benstowe, President of the National Association of Plants Operators (NAPO), representing many of the affected workers, appealed for immediate involvement from anti-corruption bodies. He urged security agencies, including the Department of State Services and the Inspector General of Police, to ensure peaceful actions without intimidation tactics.
Efforts to obtain an official comment from NLNG’s Corporate Communications, through Mr. Emma Nwatu, have so far been unsuccessful. The standoff shows the necessity for transparent payroll practices and timely issuance of tax identification to safeguard employee rights.
