The former Administrator of Rivers State, Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd), officially transferred the reins of government to Governor Siminialayi Fubara during a state-wide address. Ibas noted that he successfully fulfilled the task of restoring stability to Rivers State, an assignment entrusted to him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Ibas stated that half a year ago, President Tinubu gave him the solemn duty to guide Rivers State through an unprecedented period in its history. Ibas emphasized that through divine grace and united efforts, they have achieved the objectives of restoring peace and progress in the state. He recounted the free and fair local government elections held recently in the state, and how the elected chairmen now serve their constituencies.
He outlined key achievements including the reconstitution of statutory boards and commissions actively performing their functions, along with the approval of the state budget by the National Assembly, providing a solid foundation for governance and development.
Despite these advancements, Ibas emphasized the need for vigilance, sacrifice, and principled leadership.
Speaking of the lessons from the emergency administration, Ibas warned that unchecked power can weaken institutions, and conflicts without dialogue threaten democracy. According to him, the state of emergency declaration serves as a reminder that our political health depends less on individual victories and more on how differences are managed, institutions upheld, and unity fostered.
Ibas expressed gratitude to the many individuals who supported him during the six months rule:
I encountered remarkable individuals, dedicated public servants, wise elders offering crucial guidance, loyal family members, and young aides committed to this endeavor. I salute my colleagues in uniform whose bravery ensured peace and security. Rivers owes them a profound debt of gratitude – Ibas
He extended special thanks to the people of Rivers, commending their resilience and hope in restoring dignity to governance and returning what rightfully belongs to them. Ibas urged the public to offer their full support, as he passed leadership back to Governor Fubara, stressing that leadership and followership share responsibility for progress. According to him, no vision can thrive without the backing of the citizens.
Ibas conveyed his appreciation to President Tinubu for entrusting him with the crucial task and supporting him throughout. He hoped that Rivers State would never again approach a brink of collapse, calling for unity, dialogue, and continuous progress to preserve the state’s renowned spirit.
