Two Nigerian inmates who fled a prison in Nepal during recent anti-government unrest have been detained by India’s border security agents. The apprehension took place near the India-Nepal frontier on Saturday.

The suspects were among a group of detainees who broke free from several correctional facilities in Nepal amid widespread protests that swept the country in recent weeks. According to a report from the Press Trust of India, authorities arrested the individuals at Jainagar in Bihar State while they tried to re-enter Nepal clandestinely.

A security official told news outlets that authorities have captured over 79 escapees along various stretches of the India-Nepal border in recent days. The sprawling boundary, stretching 1,751 kilometers across five Indian states, remains largely unsecured, prompting intensified law enforcement patrols across the region.

This crackdown by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), India’s paramilitary force, shows concerns over cross-border crime and unauthorized movements.

In a related development reported last month, Indian police arrested eight Nigerians in Kozhikode City, accusing them of playing key roles in a broader drug trafficking network operating nationwide. The Gujarat and Haryana police units, working jointly, uncovered a complex manufacturing setup for synthetic narcotics.

Authorities vow to maintain heightened surveillance and reinforce cooperative measures to prevent similar incidents.
