The national electricity grid experienced another failure on Wednesday, resulting in widespread power outages across Abuja and other areas serviced by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC). The disruption occurred late morning, severely reducing power supply.

Data from the Independent System Operator (ISO) revealed a dramatic drop in electricity generation, plunging from 2,917.83 megawatts (MW) to a mere 1.5 MW between 11 a.m. and noon on Wednesday. This sharp decline triggered the blackout affecting multiple franchise zones served by AEDC.

In an official communication, AEDC confirmed that the blackout stemmed from a sudden loss of supply at approximately 11:23 a.m. Customers across the affected regions were informed of the outage and advised that steps were being taken to stabilize the power infrastructure.

The distribution company reassured consumers that it is collaborating closely with relevant authorities to restore electricity swiftly once the national grid regains stability.

This latest collapse shows the current challenges with Nigeria’s power transmission system and the urgent need for comprehensive solutions. Officials urge electricity distribution stakeholders to intensify efforts to improve grid reliability, as electricity is crucial to daily life and economic vitality.
