Three police officers were fatally shot at a checkpoint in Egbe, a community in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, in the early hours of Wednesday. The attack occurred near the boundary between Kogi and Kwara states.
The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Aya, confirmed the tragic incident, noting that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, has dispatched a tactical team to the scene to investigate and apprehend those responsible. He confirmed that three of their officers on duty were killed at Egbe, which lies on the border with Kwara State. He added that authorities have deployed specialized units, and efforts are underway to track down the perpetrators.
This development follows a similar deadly assault last Thursday at the Obehie boundary between Rivers and Abia states, where armed men believed to be militants attacked members of the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU). According to a police briefing, over 20 gunmen arrived in three SUVs disguised behind long trucks and opened fire on CTU personnel stationed at a sandbag checkpoint.
The operatives engaged the assailants fiercely, compelling them to withdraw, though the forces suffered casualties. Two CTU inspectors, Ishaya Audu and Anthony Emmanuel, lost their lives during the exchange, and the attackers seized their weapons. Vehicles used by the attackers were hit by bullets during the clash, indicating heavy resistance by the officers on site.
Subsequent to the clash, security reinforcements have been sent to the area to strengthen patrols, search for the missing rifles, and recover any injured or deceased assailants. The victims’ bodies were transported to Euro Allied Mortuary on Port Harcourt Road in Aba for preservation. Police in Abia State continue their investigation, aiming to bring the culprits to justice.
