Former President Goodluck Jonathan has openly criticized the political climate in Nigeria, calling it rife with liars and betrayers. Speaking at the 70th birthday celebration of his trusted former Chief of Staff, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, in Benin, he lamented the inconsistency he sees among politicians.
Jonathan outlined the challenge of finding politicians who maintain the same stance throughout the day, emphasizing the rising trend of shifting loyalties and dishonesty. Drawing on his own experience during the heated 2015 elections, which he lost to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, he singled out Oghiadomhe as a rare dependable companion, someone willing to stand firmly by his side. He stated that many others quickly change their words, making their promises unreliable.
It’s difficult to see somebody who will say the same thing in the morning and in the evening. Mike is someone you can take his word to the bank. Most other politicians change their tune within hours
Several senior figures within the People’s Democratic Party, including former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, have encouraged Jonathan to contest the presidency in 2027. Though public calls continue, Jonathan has yet to respond, and some of his close circles affirm that he prefers to uphold his role as a respected statesman rather than risk his international reputation or disrupt southern unity. However, his cousin Robert Azibaola remains convinced that Jonathan will enter the race.
The birthday event attracted notable dignitaries such as former Governors Lucky Igbinedion and Osarhiemen Osunbor, as well as current deputies and political leaders, celebrating Oghiadomhe’s dedication and the complex realities of Nigerian politics.
