Presidential campaign posters calling for former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan have surfaced prominently at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) headquarters in Abuja.
The display coincides with Monday’s National Executive Council (NEC) gathering, where key party decisions are to be made for the 2027 elections.
The PDP’s 102nd assembly is taking place at Wadata House, the party’s central office, as internal debates intensify. Attendees are set to confirm the zoning arrangement for the upcoming presidency, outline the schedule for the party convention slated for November, and discuss disciplinary measures for party members. Posters emblazoned with the slogan, “We Want Goodluck Jonathan”, have been strategically placed around the venue’s entrance, bringing speculation about the source and intent behind the visible campaign push.
Stakeholders note that the decision on whether to rotate the presidential ticket to the south or north is at the forefront of discussions, which may explain the sudden surge in public endorsements for Jonathan by an unidentified faction. Earlier this month, ex-Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido touted Jonathan as the strongest contender for the PDP’s 2027 bid, urging party members to rally behind him.
He emphasized Jonathan’s governance experience, collaborative approach, and unmatched qualifications compared to other southern party members.
For PDP now, they should try to woo him. He is their best bet. Anybody put forth by the PDP, Nigerians will support him. Jonathan is undoubtedly the party’s top candidate. No one else in the PDP matches his competence and readiness to lead. If the southern region gets the ticket, Jonathan remains the clear favorite within the party – Lamido
Supporting this momentum, the pro-Jonathan advocacy group, Bring Back Our Goodluck, convened a press briefing in Kano on August 24, urging the former president to re-enter the political arena, which was extensively reported by Dawn Herald on the 25th of August, 2025. According to the report, their spokesperson, Dr. Grema Kyari, described Jonathan as the essential remedy to Nigeria’s current socio-political crises under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Kyari stated,
The 2015 elections misled Nigerians. The APC promised progress but instead brought widespread hardship and insecurity
He drew parallels with international leaders who have staged political comebacks, suggesting Jonathan’s return is both timely and necessary.
Despite the increasing calls, Jonathan has maintained a discreet public stance since his 2015 electoral defeat, with no confirmed announcements regarding a 2027 presidential run.
