Dawn prayers turned deadly in Gidan Mantau community, Katsina State, as bandits launched a brutal attack leaving over 50 people dead. Survivors recount harrowing tales while rescue efforts persist amid growing fears.
In the early hours of Tuesday, an armed group overwhelmed Gidan Mantau, a remote village in Malumfashi Local Government Area, where residents were observing morning worship. The violent raid resulted in a staggering death toll exceeding fifty, as villagers scrambled to recover bodies hidden in surrounding bushes.
Residents described the retaliation as a nightmare unleashed by some 100 bandits under the notorious Mustapha Babaro, operating between Katsina and Zamfara States. After assaulting the mosque, assailants rampaged through the village, killing, abducting over 100 vulnerable community members, including women, children, and even pregnant women, and torching fifteen homes.
One survivor tearfully recounted how an entire household of 15 was locked in and burnt alive, illustrating the horror inflicted on families. Many affected lament a chronic sense of abandonment, citing delayed government response and inadequate security presence on the once-deserted access roads leading to their community.
This massacre adds to a consistent pattern of violence in southern Katsina, despite sporadic peace pacts brokered in adjacent areas. Security expert Major Bashir Galma (rtd) warned that half-baked peace agreements could exacerbate insecurity, urging collective regional cooperation and steadfast political commitment to address these threats sustainably.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, acknowledged ongoing military operations to curb terrorism and banditry across the North West but challenges persist. He revealed recent arrests of key militant figures and joint security efforts yielding progress, yet called for public support to deny terrorists their local allies.
The Defence Chief also attributed political elements complicating security dynamics, emphasizing the need for reforms in Nigeria’s legal frameworks to ensure swift justice for offenders. He also ascribed regional instability in neighboring countries as a factor contributing to the proliferation of arms and militants.
We have intensified operations nationwide, and although we’ve made serious breakthroughs, these killings remain deeply troubling. These are individuals driven by extremist ideologies who show no respect for life or borders – General Musa, CDS
Major Bashir Galma added,
Peace deals that exclude some regions only push bandits into those areas. Without unified efforts by northern leaders, this menace will continue to fester
A devastated local woman, affected severely by this attack, begged
My husband and children were taken from me. I am left alone and confused. This trauma is unbearable. Please tell our leaders to come to our rescue
The call for decisive and coordinated intervention grows louder, in Gidan Mantau community, Katsina State, as the whole community mourns over those killed. Authorities face mounting pressure to accelerate security responses, rescue abducted residents, and enact reforms that can bring lasting peace to Katsina and other hotspot areas in the northern region. The resilience of these communities depends on meaningful action and solidarity from all levels.
