In a recent interview, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, Labour Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, openly questioned the credibility of the opposition alliance under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), urging Nigerians to reconsider their political loyalties ahead of the 2027 election.
During a Friday discussion on Channels Television’s, Baba-Ahmed expressed skepticism about the ADC’s promises to uplift Nigeria from poverty and underdevelopment. The former running mate of Peter Obi accused the coalition of misleading citizens with unattainable claims. Baba-Ahmed, who contested alongside Obi in the last presidential race that saw Bola Tinubu emerge victorious, emphasized his continued allegiance to the Labour Party and his hopes for a strong comeback in the next poll.
He revealed a preference for Obi to remain within the Labour Party fold rather than aligning with ADC members like Atiku Abubakar and Nasir el-Rufai, whom Obi has been linked to. Baba-Ahmed reiterated his readiness to again serve as Obi’s deputy if the opportunity arises, noting his unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s welfare.
On his willingness to partner with others, Baba-Ahmed remarked that only two individuals would gain his support as running mates, one yet to make an announcement and the other being Peter Obi himself.
The former Labour Party vice-presidential aspirant also stated his intention to remain actively involved in efforts that align with restoring national progress, identifying with like-minded groups and leaders.
My dedication to Nigeria never fades…they are deceiving us…I’m in the Labour Party. I’m a Peter Obi man. I still want Peter Obi to come back to the Labour Party and contest the 2027 election. If Nigeria is still around and there is an electoral system to follow, I’m ready to serve again…only two figures have my confidence. The first one has not said anything. The second one is Peter Obi. I’m always with Peter Obi until he decides not to
Baba-Ahmed’s stance is just a glimpse of the rising tensions within Nigeria’s opposition as the 2027 election nears. It shows there are big conversations happening about which direction to take and who to team up with. By choosing to stick with the Labour Party, he’s making a clear statement at a time when new political alliances are starting to reshape the country’s political future.
