Former Governor Nasir El-Rufai surprised many during the recent Kaduna State by-elections when he openly supported candidates from two different opposition parties.

His unusual move stirred a lot of talk and debate in communities across the state.

El-Rufai campaigned for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate in Chikun/Kajuru’s Federal House of Representatives contest, engaging locals in areas like Kujama and Nasarawa. At the same time, he threw his weight behind the Social Democratic Party (SDP) hopefuls in Zaria Kewaye and Basawa constituencies, where the SDP has a stronger grassroots presence.

Despite his active involvement, none of the candidates he supported secured victory, as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged winners in all three constituencies.

Political insiders shared that El-Rufai’s approach was a calculated move to sustain unity within the opposition coalition, while affirming his continued influence in Kaduna politics. It was reported that the SDP’s foundation in Zaria and Sabon Gari predates the rise of the ADC, making it practical to back their candidates there. Conversely, the ADC’s position was stronger in Chikun and Kajuru, guiding El-Rufai’s support decisions.

Some coalition members revealed that although the SDP’s national leaders deny being part of the alliance, the parties are working closely at the local level.

Haruna Malam, a voter from Nasarawa, saw no issue with El-Rufai backing candidates from both parties.

It’s the same for me. He supported the stronger candidate in each area, so it made sense

On the other hand, a Kaduna ADC insider expressed concern,

Campaigning for two different parties confused many voters, especially in Zaria and Sabon Gari. This kind of mixed messaging isn’t helpful.

The by-election results, with the APC’s clear wins, shows the challenges facing opposition groups in Kaduna. As the coalition navigates these complexities, its ability to stay coordinated and present united campaigns will be crucial ahead of the 2027 polls.
