In a solemn gesture of respect, the National Assembly has announced a suspension of all legislative activities following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2025, in London. His death has triggered a nationwide outpouring of tributes, with the legislature moving swiftly to honour the late leader’s legacy.

The directive was made public through a statement signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana. According to the notice, both Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen ordered the suspension of legislative duties until Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
“In honour of his legacy and service to the nation… all legislative activities are suspended immediately,” the statement noted.

Lawmakers were further instructed to adjust both official and personal schedules to ensure full participation in mourning and tribute activities. The National Assembly’s leadership underscored the importance of collective national reflection, describing Buhari’s passing as a significant loss to the country.

Offering condolences, the statement expressed sympathy to Buhari’s immediate family, the government and people of Nigeria, and his home state of Katsina. “On behalf of members and staff of the National Assembly… heartfelt condolences [are extended] to the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” it stated.

Buhari, known for his austere lifestyle and strong stance on national discipline, served as both military head of state and two-term civilian president. He was widely regarded as a symbol of personal integrity and a steadfast advocate for national unity during turbulent times in Nigeria’s political evolution.

Ogunlana closed the announcement with a prayer: “President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered for his commitment to Nigeria’s unity and his integrity. May Almighty Allah grant his soul eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.”
