The European Union (EU) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have reaffirmed their commitment to assisting displaced communities in Benue State, particularly Yelwata, to return safely to their ancestral homes.
Speaking during a visit to the emergency camp for displaced persons located at the International Market in Makurdi, representatives of both organisations emphasised the need for peacebuilding and sustainable development in violence-affected areas.
EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, revealed that discussions with state authorities were scheduled to explore how the EU could actively support peace efforts and development strategies in the region. He also disclosed that the EU would be launching a social protection programme in Benue State, describing it as a timely initiative in light of recent displacements due to violent attacks.
“This is something that was already planned for some time, but it came at the right moment to express our support to state authorities and the affected communities,” Mignot said. He highlighted the EU’s foundational history—born from the devastation of two world wars—as a testament to the power of unity and reconciliation. “We believe lasting peace can only come from dialogue and mutual understanding between communities,” he added.
UNICEF Country Representative in Nigeria, Cristian Munduate, echoed similar sentiments, noting that displaced residents, particularly from Yelwata, were eager to return home and rebuild their lives.
According to Munduate, community leaders expressed a strong desire to resume farming, education, and other aspects of normal life, despite the destruction in their hometowns. “They want their children to be back in school, they want to work their land. That’s a powerful statement of resilience,” she noted.
UNICEF, she said, is planning a joint response with the UN and the EU to facilitate a smooth reintegration process. This includes assessing and rehabilitating critical infrastructure such as schools, healthcare facilities, and water sources. “We will come, with a joint response… and support for their return to their community,” Munduate affirmed.
Representing Governor Hyacinth Alia, Secretary to the State Government, Deborah Aber, expressed gratitude to the international organisations for their support. She assured that the Benue State Government remains fully committed to the safe return and rehabilitation of displaced persons, adding that collaborative efforts are vital for lasting peace and recovery in the region.
