Several Nigerian soldiers and armed bandits lost their lives during fierce clashes that erupted following a coordinated assault on military outposts in parts of Niger and Kaduna states on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
The brazen attacks targeted forward operating bases in the Kwanar Dutse Mairiga and Boka areas of Niger State, as well as Aungwan Turai in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The Nigerian Army revealed that the gunmen launched a simultaneous, three-front offensive against the military installations, attempting to overwhelm the bases. The attack triggered swift and forceful responses from security forces, who deployed both ground troops and aerial support to counter the aggression.
According to a statement issued by the Army on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, the troops engaged the attackers in multiple counter-assaults. These efforts reportedly led to the neutralization of a significant number of the assailants. “Land and air component troops launched several counterattacks that eliminated scores of bandits in the encounters,” the Army said.
Despite the military’s efforts, the Nigerian Army confirmed that some of its personnel were killed in the line of duty. “Sadly, some gallant warriors paid the supreme price in the day-long battles,” the statement read, underscoring the high cost of defending the outposts against the coordinated incursion.
In addition to those killed, four soldiers sustained gunshot injuries during the confrontations. The Army noted that the wounded personnel are currently receiving medical care and are responding to treatment. No details were provided on the number of attackers or soldiers killed.
While the Army pledged to release further updates, the statement did not disclose the precise number of casualties among either the security forces or the assailants. The attacks underscore ongoing security challenges in the region, particularly around the volatile North-West and North-Central corridors where armed groups remain active.
