President Bola Tinubu will select his 2027 running mate after the All Progressives Congress (APC) convention, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, announced in an Interview.
Speculation about Tinubu dropping Vice President Kashim Shettima for the 2027 election sparked controversy after an APC stakeholders’ summit in Gombe endorsed Tinubu’s second term without mentioning Shettima, leading to disruptions by delegates. Onanuga dismissed the issue as a “non-issue,” explaining that in a presidential system, the candidate is nominated first, followed by the running mate selection after the party convention, as per the Independent National Electoral Commission’s timetable.
Onanuga refuted claims of a rift between Tinubu and Shettima, calling them “beer parlour gossip.” He emphasized their “excellent working relationship” and debunked rumors, including absurd claims that Tinubu’s son, Seyi, was the vice president, labeling such talk as “absolute nonsense.”
The presidency’s clarification aims to quell speculation and maintain party unity ahead of the 2027 elections. Onanuga’s remarks underscore the procedural nature of selecting a running mate, aligning with standard political processes within the APC.
