No Nigerian university ranked among the top 1,000 in the 2026 Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings, released June 19, 2025, with Egypt and South Africa leading African representation.

The QS World University Rankings, published annually, evaluate institutions using eight key indicators, including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, and citations per faculty. Only three Nigerian universities—University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, and Ahmadu Bello University—were ranked. UI and UNILAG placed in the 1,001–1,200 band, consistent with 2025, while ABU debuted in the 1,201–1,400 range.

Egypt topped African rankings with 20 universities listed, followed by South Africa with 11. Tunisia had four, while Ghana, Morocco, Kenya, Libya, Sudan, Uganda, and Ethiopia each had fewer. South Africa’s University of Cape Town (150th) and University of Witwatersrand (291st) were the only African institutions in the global top 300.

Nigerian universities struggle with low research output, limited international collaboration, and weak employability metrics, despite producing many graduates annually. These factors continue to hinder their global ranking performance for the third consecutive year.

Globally, the top 10 universities include MIT (1st), Imperial College London (2nd), and Stanford (3rd), excelling in research, faculty reputation, and international partnerships. The QS rankings highlight the competitive gap Nigerian institutions face in achieving global academic prominence.
