The Gaya Emirate Council in Kano State has revoked the traditional title of Wazirin Gaya from Alhaji Usman Alhaji, a former Secretary to the State Government under ex-Governor Ganduje. The decision follows Alhaji’s recent public criticism of Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration over alleged excessive borrowing, a claim the state government has denied.
In a letter issued by the Secretary to the Gaya Emirate Council, Alhaji Bello Halilu, the council cited “unavoidable circumstances” for the immediate withdrawal of the title. The letter expressed appreciation for Alhaji’s contributions during his tenure as Wazirin Gaya, acknowledging his commitment to promoting the emirate’s cultural heritage and supporting the traditional institution.
The council emphasized that the action reflects its dedication to upholding the sanctity, dignity, and integrity of traditional titles in accordance with established customs and values. The public has been urged to take note of the development, which has sparked discussions in Kano’s political circles.
Alhaji, also the National President of APC Patriotic Volunteers, had recently challenged the Yusuf administration to account for a $6.6 million external loan reportedly borrowed between June and December 2023, citing data from the Debt Management Office. He further criticized the government’s performance, alleging mismanagement of over N5 billion in ecological funds meant to address environmental challenges.
The state government has not issued a formal response to the title withdrawal, and Alhaji has yet to comment publicly on the emirate’s decision. The move underscores ongoing tensions between traditional institutions and political actors in Kano State.
