The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command has dismantled a well-organized illegal sand mining operation at the Omambala River in Ifite-Ogwari, Ayamelum Local Government Area.
Commandant Maku Olatunde confirmed the raid at the NSCDC headquarters in Awka, noting that the move aligns with the Corps’ ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining across the state.
The operation, carried out by the Mines and Steel Development Unit of the NSCDC in collaboration with the newly appointed Anambra State Federal Mines Officer, Engr. Edet Anthony Oku, was initiated based on credible intelligence. “On Friday, May 30, 2025 at about 13:05 hours, the command swooped in on an illegal mining site located at Omambala River Ifite-Ogwari in Ayamelum Local Government Area of the state,” Maku stated.
According to Maku, the suspects fled upon the team’s arrival, abandoning various equipment including a dredger, two engine pumps, drums, pipes, jerrycans, and other mining tools. “Exhibits recovered from site included, one dredger, two dredging engine pumps, eighteen drums, five suction pipes, eight plastic discharge pipes, three jerrycans (25L), one plastic bucket and one funnel,” he said.
He disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed the site was originally licensed to Hon. Ike Nweke of Messrs. Trillike Investment Ltd, but had been overtaken by unauthorized miners led by a suspect identified as Mr. Uche Joshua Okafor, who is now at large. “As part of our mandate, we are duty-bound to safeguard the interests of legitimate title holders by sealing off illegal mining sites and facilitating the lawful operations of verified title holders,” Maku explained.
Reaffirming the NSCDC’s resolve to clamp down on illicit mining, Maku emphasized the broader implications of such activities. “By doing so, we prevent revenue loss, environmental degradation, and promote sustainability in the sector,” he said. He added that investigations are ongoing and those found complicit will be prosecuted. “Upon the conclusion of investigation, those found culpable would be formally charged to court to face the consequences of their actions,” he warned, urging illegal miners to desist or face legal action.
