The UK set to construct up to 12 nuclear-powered attack submarines to replace its Astute-class fleet, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced, unveiling a Strategic Defence Review to bolster warfighting readiness.

The review, set to be detailed on Monday, responds to growing global threats, particularly from Russia, and commits £15 billion to modernize the UK’s nuclear warhead program. The SSN-AUKUS submarines, developed with the US and Australia, will enter service in the late 2030s, enhancing NATO’s security.

Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the need to counter Russian aggression, stating the submarines will ensure Britain’s safety. The project is expected to sustain 30,000 jobs, 30,000 apprenticeships, and 14,000 graduate roles over the next decade, boosting the economy.

Critics, including the Liberal Democrats, question the funding plan, as Labour aims for 3% of GDP on defence by 2034 without firm commitments. The timeline has sparked concerns about urgency given current geopolitical tensions.

The review also includes investments in drones, cyber defenses, and Dreadnought submarines, reinforcing the UK’s continuous-at-sea nuclear deterrent. Starmer called it a “radical blueprint” to secure Britain and support NATO allies.
