The twenty-eight travellers abducted in Plateau State last month have safely regained their freedom after 20 days in captivity. The victims, who were seized on December 21, in Wase Local Government Area, were released on Friday night, January 9, after an operation carried out by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The travellers were ambushed while journeying to a religious celebration (Maulud) in Bashar district of Plateau State.
Community leaders and family members confirmed the release on Saturday morning, thanking the government and the Department of State Services (DSS) for the intervention.
Operatives of DSS called in the night they had rescued the victims. It was good news everywhere because people had been worried about what would happen if the conditions weren’t met – Sapi’i Sambo, Youth Leader in Wase LGA
Dawn Herald gathered from local sources that no ransom was paid to secure the release of the victim, despite the demand for a ₦42 million ransom by the kidnappers. All 28 victims, including an Islamic scholar, two princes, and several children, are currently receiving medical attention and debriefing in Bashar town.
