Togo, Benin, Niger owe Nigeria ₦25.36B unpaid electricity debts – NERC

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) revealed in its Third Quarter 2025 report that Togo, Niger, and Benin, currently owe the Nigerian electricity market a total of ₦25.36 billion. ‎The debt is valued at ₦25.36 billion based on the current exchange rate.

‎The NERC Q3 2025 stated that while Nigeria continues to supply cross-border power to Togo, Niger, and Benin, the remittance rate from these nations has plummeted to 38.09%.

‎Out of an $18.69 million bill issued for the third quarter of 2025, only $7.125 million was paid. When combined with legacy debts from previous periods, the total outstanding balance has hit $17.8 million.

‎Meanwhile, domestic Nigerian customers (DisCos) have shown far better discipline this year, recording a 95.21% remittance rate, compared to the international neighbors.

‎While international neighbors paid only 38% of their Q3 bills, Nigerian distribution companies (DisCos) remitted ₦381.29bn out of ₦400.48bn (95%).

‎The three entities involved are CEET (Togo), SBEE (Benin Republic), and NIGELEC (Niger).
