The NIgerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has activated its plan to shutdown, TICS 2.0 (Total Industrial and Clinical Services), due to the refusal of the government to honor welfare agreements.

‎NARD President Dr. Mohammad Suleiman stated that despite suspending a previous 29-day strike in November 2025 to give the government room for dialogue, no visible progress has been made on their core demands. The strike, beginning at midnight on January 12, threatens to paralyze public hospitals nationwide.

‎Resident doctors make up the majority of the medical workforce in the tertiary hospitals of the country. The current dispute centers on a minimum list of nine demands that have remained unresolved for years.

‎The government claims to have met 19 out of 20 demands, but NARD has dismissed these claims as anticipation of action rather than action itself, stating that doctors’ bank accounts still haven’t been credited with the promised arrears.

‎The strike will be accompanied by protests, followed by regional rallies and a national protest in Abuja. A major reason for the protest is for the reinstatement of five doctors allegedly wrongfully dismissed from the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja.
