United States Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on Saturday that deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, have been indicted in Southern District of New York.

The charges, which include narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, and weapons, mark the first time a sitting head of state has been captured and brought to the U.S. for trial since the 1989 arrest of Panama’s Manuel Noriega.

Maduro faces four primary counts. narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess the same.

The First Combatant, Cilia Flores has also been indicted. While Maduro’s charges date back to 2020, the charges against Flores were kept under seal until today.

The case will be tried in the Southern District of New York (SDNY), a court known for handling international terrorism and narcotics cases.
