The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has suspended the nationwide enforcement of its tinted glass permit policy, which was scheduled to begin today, January 2, 2026.
The suspension follows an injunction from a High Court in Delta State. The court order, issued in mid-December, restrains the police from implementing the permit system pending a final legal determination on its constitutionality.
The NPF reintroduced the permit system in 2025, over the surge in criminal activities, including kidnapping and armed robbery, facilitated by vehicles with dark windows.
However, the policy has faced opposition from civil rights groups and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), who argue that the military-era law used to justify the permits is outdated and that the new tax fee is illegal.
Force spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the NPF has filed objections to vacate the order, but will comply with the law until the court rules. The case has been adjourned to January 20, 2026.
