A Federal High Court in Abuja has refused the bail application for the former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).
Justice Emeka Nwite ordered the remand of Malami, his son Abdulaziz Malami, and a co-defendant, Hajia Bashir Asabe, at the Kuje Correctional Centre on Tuesday, December 30.
The court’s decision followed an oral bail application by the defense, which the judge declined to grant, ruling that the prosecution must be given time to formally respond to the written bail applications already on file.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has leveled a 16-count charge against Malami, his son and his co-defendant on money laundering, conspiracy, and the illicit acquisition of high-value assets between 2015 and 2025.
Allegations involve the concealment of funds exceeding ₦9 Billion, with some estimates reaching ₦212bn across various investigations. He was accused of using corporate entities like Metropolitan Auto Tech Ltd, Meethaq Hotels Ltd, and Rahamaniyya Properties Ltd to disguise the origin of illicit funds.
A specific count alleges the disguise of ₦500 Million used to purchase a luxury duplex in the Maitama District, Abuja. The EFCC also identified over 30 high-value properties across Nigeria linked to the former AGF.
