BREAKING: National grid collapses again

National electricity grid has suffered another major collapse on Monday afternoon, December 29, throwing many cities and states across the federation into a total blackout.

Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) revealed that nationwide power generation plummeted from approximately 2,660 MW at 2:00 PM to a near-zero level of 139.92 MW by 3:00 PM. This is one of the most severe disruptions in recent years, with total distribution at just 50 MW nationwide.

The collapse neutralized almost all power distribution to the eleven DisCos, leaving only a fraction of the capital and parts of the southwest with minimal supply during the initial recovery phase.

By 3:15 PM, nine of the electricity distribution companies (DisCos) of the country were receiving zero megawatts from the grid.

States like Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Yola, may likely face total darkness.

Only Abuja (AEDC) and Ibadan (IBEDC) were receiving 20 MW and 30 MW respectively to maintain critical infrastructure.

The collapse comes less than 24 hours after the Federal Government announced the successful repair of the Lagos-Escravos gas pipeline. The pipeline, which had been vandalized earlier in December, is a major artery supplying gas to thermal power plants.

‎NISO confirmed on its official social media handle (X) that a gradual restoration process has begun.
