Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, according to reports is set to dump the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC). Sources stated the decision of the Governor is irreversible and may be officially announced in the first week of January 2026.
Political stakeholders believed that the announcement of the potential defection of the Governor, was as a result of an alleged existing rift with his political mentor and father-in-law, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. The defection has caused a visible divide within the Kwankwasiyya movement, which has dominated Kano politics for years.
Key aides, including the Director of Protocol, Abdullahi Ibrahim Rogo and the DG of Media Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, have publicly backed the move. They argue that Kwankwaso’s future presidential ambitions and the prosperity of the state are better served within the APC.
We have resolved that Kwankwaso is our leader, and that he and Governor Yusuf should take us to APC… This resolution is in the best interest of our people, our country, and even Kwankwaso himself – Abdullahi Ibrahim Rogo, Director of Protocol
Insiders report that Governor Yusuf has conducted extensive consultations, and many local leaders are ready to follow his lead.
