A 19-year-old hunter, identified as Tanko Abubakar, lost his life after his loaded locally fabricated dane gun accidentally discharged, striking him in the head, while he was inspecting it, during a wedding event at Alkahira, in Gombe State.

The victim was attempting to perform a traditional celebratory shot into the air. When the weapon failed to fire, he made a grave error by looking directly into the muzzle to investigate the blockage.

Police operatives arrived at the scene shortly after the report and evacuated the victim to the Gombe State Specialist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

The Gombe State Police Command confirmed the details through a statement by the PPRO, DSP Buhari Abdullahi;

This was an accidental discharge, and we call on members of hunters’ groups and local security outfits to always exercise caution while handling locally fabricated guns, Dane guns, or pump-action firearms used in their day-to-day activities – DSP Buhari Abdullahi, Gombe PPRO
