The Mexican government has officially approved the appointment of Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United Mexican States.
The Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, José Manuel Briseño Flores, formally delivered the agrément confirming the approval on Tuesday. The document was presented to the Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Babagana Wakil, in the nation’s capital.
Announcing the development through his official X account, Omokri confirmed his primary posting and his concurrent accreditations to three Central American nations.
“To God be the glory, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to serve as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”, Omokri.
President Bola Tinubu initially nominated Omokri, a former media aide to President Goodluck Jonathan, for the ambassadorial position in November 2025. The nomination list included other prominent figures, such as former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode and former Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Mahmood Yakubu.
The Nigerian Senate confirmed Omokri alongside the other nominees in December 2025. Subsequently, on March 6, 2026, President Tinubu approved the official posting of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners, assigning Omokri to Mexico City.
However, his assumption of duty was delayed while awaiting formal diplomatic consent, known as an agrément, from the host country. In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs addressed the delay, stating that Mexico and Japan were among the countries yet to communicate formal acceptance, but assured Nigerians that diplomatic engagements were ongoing.
Omokri had previously dismissed reports that the North American country rejected his appointment. Appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today in June, he explained that the delay was tied to internal diplomatic processes and administrative preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico co-hosted with the United States and Canada.
With this clearance, the Omokri is now fully authorised to resume his diplomatic duties. The former presidential aide will also serve as Nigeria’s top diplomat to Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
