The Edo State Police have successfully rescued 11 of the 18 travelers who were abducted by gunmen on the Benin-Akure highway near Obarenren village on December 12. The police confirmed that operations are underway to secure the release of the remaining seven victims.
Dawn Herald gathered that the unknown gunmen reportedly forced the commercial vehicle to stop, fired shots, and marched the passengers into the nearby bush.
The rescue operation began immediately after the Edo State Police Command received a distress call. According to the Command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, security personnel, including the police, army, vigilantes, and local hunters, coordinated a joint operation which led to the rescue of 11 out of the 18 abducted passengers in the bush.
ASP Ikoedem assured the public that the police are doing everything possible within their capacity to secure the release of the remaining victims.
The police urged members of the public to remain calm and to cooperate by providing any information that could assist the security agencies in the current rescue mission.
