The former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), has reportedly died at a hospital in Saudi Arabia. The news of his passing, was confirmed by unnamed sources and formalized in a condolence message from a prominent legal association, on Tuesday morning.
Justice Muhammad served as the 18th Chief Justice of Nigeria from 2019 until his resignation in June 2022. He stepped down from the judicial office, officially due to ill health.
He was allegedly accused by 14 Supreme Court justices for corruption and mismanagement of the resources of the court shortly before his resignation.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS) issued a condolence statement, describing his death as a monumental loss to the Nigerian judiciary, the legal profession, the Muslim Ummah, and the nation at large, praising his commitment to fairness and the rule of law.
Justice Muhammad had a long career, rising through the ranks from Magistrate to Justice of the Court of Appeal (1993-2006) and finally to the Supreme Court (2007-2022), serving as CJN from 2019.
The legal community, remembers Justice Muhammad as a fatherly pillar who upheld the highest ideals of the Bench, with fairness, courage, and fidelity to the rule of law.
The official arrangements for the burial and funeral rites of the former Chief Justice, who was a native of Bauchi State, will be announced pending the repatriation of his remains from Saudi Arabia.
