The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has denied the claims circulating online that he collapsed and was airlifted to a hospital in London for urgent medical treatment.
The reports was first published by an online news platform on Monday, December 15, alleging that Senator Akpabio collapsed on the 10th of this month and was subsequently flown via a private jet, allegedly provided by Aliko Dangote to London. The reports stated that his condition was serious, raising concerns about his capacity to lead the Senate.
The rumor spread like fire because the Senate President missed the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) interactive session held on Wednesday, December 10 and was represented by Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi at the event.
Unofficial sources claimed the alleged medical emergency was the second time he was being rushed to London for treatment and that attending doctors were advising him to step down from the Senate to focus on his health.
Kenny Okolugbo, Consultant on Communications and Strategy to the Senate President, dismissed the reports as false.
The Senate, during plenary on Tuesday, December 16, acknowledged the rumors and directed the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the source and spread of the viral reports, which also falsely claimed the death of former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon.
