President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new Nigerian Army Depot in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen.
Waidi Shaibu, disclosed this on Saturday, stating that the project is aimed towards expanding manpower and enhancing operational capacity nationwide in response to the surge of insecurity.
The announcement was made during the Passing Out Parade (POP) of 3,439 new recruits of the 89 Regular Recruit Intake at the Depot Nigerian Army in Zaria. This new facility in Abakaliki will be the third Army Depot in the country, complementing existing facilities in Zaria, Kaduna State and Oshogbo, Osun State, which have served as primary training centers for decades.
The COAS emphasized that the new depot is a strategic necessity to ensure a continuous supply of well-trained soldiers and improve the Army’s capacity to address threats across all geopolitical zones. The new facility will focus on providing specialist and mission-oriented training in areas like marksmanship and fieldcraft.
The establishment of a new depot is praised by the military high command as a step in boosting the country’s defence infrastructure and operational readiness. The COAS assured the recruits of continuous support for training, logistics, and personnel welfare, stressing that their loyalty and professionalism are vital to national security.
