Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has stated that the upcoming 2027 general election is preventing him from taking decisive action, including the dismissal of unproductive government officials.
The Governor made the statement in Minna during the swearing-in ceremony for 30 commissioners and 25 newly elected local government chairpersons, which his administration calls the second phase of the New Niger agenda.
The Governor emphasized that political considerations tied to the next election restrict his ability to implement necessary reforms, particularly personnel changes.
I am an advocate of a single term for governors because unfortunately we are back politically. Everything in Nigeria is full of politics. It is unfortunate. If it were a single term; I would have been more decisive than who I am today
The new appointees, sworn in by Justice Maimuna Abubakar, representing the State Chief Judge, had undergone an eight-day retreat focused on security and agricultural revival, which are the key pillars of the agenda of the administration.
The “New Niger agenda” is the long-term vision of the Governor for the state, which includes a focus on agricultural revolution, security, healthcare, and infrastructure development. The Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, described the swearing in of the officials as timely and strategic, giving the newly inaugurated officials the platform to renew their commitment to serving the state.
Governor Bago urged the newly sworn-in officials to support the “New Niger agenda” and called on residents to unite against insecurity.
