Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, has approved the indefinite continuation of the Free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Mass Transit Scheme of the state, due to the undeniable positive impact on citizens facing economic hardship.

Launched in July 2025, the program served as a response to the removal of fuel subsidies, for the purpose of easing the transportation burden of citizens who rely on road transport for daily survival. The program utilizes CNG-powered buses as a cost-efficient alternative to petrol-fueled public transport.

The scheme, described by Governor Sani as a lifesaving intervention, was introduced to cushion the economic effects of rising transport costs on low-income families. Initial data from July to November 2025 by the government, revealed that over 1.4 million passengers benefited from the free service transportation, which saved Kaduna households an estimated ₦1.39 billion in transport fares.

The program, which initially targeted civil servants and students, was expanded to include all commuters across designated routes in Kaduna, Zaria, and Kafanchan. The fleet of 100 CNG buses currently caters to over 18,000 passengers daily across 200 bus stops, covering routes such as Tudun Wada, Kawo, Rigachikun and Rigasa, NEPA Roundabout. The Governor emphasized that these savings are being redirected by families towards crucial needs like school fees, food, and healthcare.

Governor Sani declared that the administration is committed to expanding the fleet and upgrading the accompanying infrastructure for the purpose of strengthening the social contract between the state and its citizens, and also serving as a model for other states to emulate.
