King Charles III made an announcement on Friday that his schedule of cancer treatment will be reduced in 2026. The monarch shared the good news in a video filmed for the annual Stand Up To Cancer fundraising campaign on Channel 4 television.
In his message, the King advocated for proactive health measures, revealing he was troubled to learn that at least nine million people in the UK are not up to date with the cancer screenings available to them.
King Charles III, who is 77, disclosed his cancer diagnosis in February 2024. The announcement marked a departure from the royal tradition, setting a new precedent for transparency regarding his health, a trend followed by his daughter-in-law, Catherine, Princess of Wales, who also announced her diagnosis shortly thereafter.
The King’s cancer was detected in January 2024 during treatment for a benign prostate condition, although the Palace has confirmed he does not have prostate cancer. He has not disclosed the type of cancer he is battling or the specific treatment received. The King initially suspended public duties but resumed them in April 2024, hosting world leaders and making state visits.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer reacted to the news on X, stating that he was glad to hear of the treatment reduction, stressing that early cancer screening saves lives.
