The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), has welcomed the defection of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Keyamo made the statement while inaugurating the Igwuruta-Airport Road project constructed by the Rivers State Government.

‎Governor Fubara, who was elected via the PDP in 2023, formally announced his defection to the APC earlier this week, receiving his APC membership card on Friday, December 12. This development follows a power struggle between the Governor and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The feud had previously led to a split in the State House of Assembly, with the Speaker and sixteen members also defecting to the APC.

‎Governor Fubara justified his defection stressing the need to align the state with the federal government to ensure stability and accelerate development. He described the move as a spiritual assignment necessary to ensure a seamless and productive working relationship with the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government.

‎Speaking in Rivers State, Minister Keyamo  lauded President Bola Tinubu’s leadership for making the APC an attractive party in the South-South region.

‎Speaking on the Governors’ defection from the PDP to the APC, Keyamo stated;

We set a trap to catch a frog, but we caught an elephant in the person of Sir Siminalayi Fubara

‎Keyamo stated that the realignment would only bring progress to the state.

‎However, the opposition PDP has criticized the move, stressing that the defection was an orchestrated outcome of the political crisis used to intimidate the Governor.
