Seven women were killed and 11 others injured in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State on Monday during a protest against the response of the military to the current communal clashes between the Bachama and Chobo communities in the State.

The fatalities occurred when the women, who were carrying leaves and attempting to block the movement of troops, were allegedly fired with live gunfire from the military. Four women reportedly died on the spot, and three others succumbed to their injuries at Numan General Hospital, while eleven wounded individuals remained in critical condition.

The protest started after women from the community accused the security agencies of delayed response and biased intervention in favor of the Chobo community. The women gathered, held leaves and physically blocked the troops, begging for a quick and impartial security intervention.

‎The District Head of Gyawana, Chief Agoso Bamaiyi, confirmed the incident that the women came out peacefully, carrying leaves, begging for security, instead, they were met with live gunfire.

‎Adamawa State Police Spokesman, S.P. Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed that lives were lost and the injured were taken to the hospital. He declined to give a definitive casualty figure or pre-empt the cause pending investigation.

‎In response to this, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri imposed a 24-hour curfew on the entire Lamurde Local Government Area, effective immediately. The Governor ordered security operatives to move into the troubled communities of Rugange, Wadugo, and neighboring villages to re-establish stability and prevent further loss of life.
