A deadly fire outbreak at Birch nightclub in Arpora, North Goa, has killed at least 23 people, including several tourists, in the early hours of Sunday. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed the deaths, stating that the initial findings found that the club was operating without proper permissions and had violated fire safety measures.

The fire, which broke out around midnight, is suspected to have been triggered by a cylinder blast. Most of the victims reportedly died from suffocation as thick smoke filled the premises, with only three succumbing to burn injuries.
Many of the casualties were staff members who were trapped, especially in the kitchen and the basement areas.
He vowed to take strict legal action under the law against the club management and any officials found responsible for allowing the operation despite flouting safety rules.
Police confirmed that the dead included three to four tourists and a significant number of staff.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and announced an ex gratia of ₹200,000 for the families of the deceased from the PMNRF.
