The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has issued a warning against any attempt to derail Nigeria’s constitutional order, stating that the country remains the functioning democracy in West Africa and the Sahel region, which includes countries like Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, all currently under military rule. The latest addition to the list is Guinea-Bissau, which experienced a coup in November.

Speaking on Thursday at a forum in Abuja, Ribadu stressed that while Nigeria is facing challenging times, democracy must be jealously guarded against the backdrop of recent military takeovers across West Africa and the Sahel.

The rise of these military juntas has been linked to democratic erosion, worsening insecurity, and public frustration, resulting in geopolitical realignment where Western influence is waning in favor of new partnerships.

‎The NSA vowed that the country would take firm and decisive action against any group or individual threatening national security and unity.

Nigeria remains fully committed to law, order, and the protection of citizens. Anyone, an individual or group, who exploits communities, spreads terror, or attempts to undermine national unity will face coordinated and decisive action..

Ribadu stressed the progress of the government in addressing insecurity, particularly through the judicial process. He revealed that Nigeria has secured 775 terrorism-related convictions.

‎He stated that security challenges often originate at the local level, calling for the collaboration of communities, traditional rulers, and religious leaders in resolving disputes and preventing violence to reduce the need for military deployment.

‎The National Security Adviser emphasizes the need to protect democracy in the face of multiple successful coups across the region.
