At least five students of the Rivers State University (RSU) Emohua Satellite Campus have been abducted by unknown gunmen, suspected to be members of a cult group, from their off-campus residence in the Emohua Local Government Area in the early hours of Tuesday.
This attack comes just hours after the University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi, dismisses calls for the campus to be closed or students to be relocated after student protests over reoccurring insecurity, insisting that the university was addressing security issues through engagement with community leaders, local council authorities, and security agencies. The protest was led by off-campus students, who appealed to the RSU management to relocate them to the main campus in Port Harcourt for safety, but their plea was denied.
The armed assailants invade the isolated off-campus accommodation in the Rumuchi/Rumuohia area of Emohua, around 2:00 am.
An eyewitness who narrowly escaped the abduction recounted that the attackers were masked and shot dead the security dog before storming the residence to abduct the victims.
The Spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the abduction, identifying the perpetrators as cultists. SP Iringe-Koko stated that the police have launched a manhunt aimed at rescuing the abducted students and to bring the perpetrators to book. The Commissioner of Police added that she is personally leading the tactical teams deployed to the area to ensure their rescue.
