Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has formally resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and is set to announce his new political platform before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nomination deadline this month.
The Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, confirmed the governor’s resignation, which was reportedly submitted on November 4, 2025. Alimi stated that the move was as a result of the prolonged internal crises and division at the national level of the PDP, which could jeopardize his nomination for the upcoming governorship election.
Governor Adeleke’s defection according to political actors is a necessary step taken ahead of the August 8, 2026, governorship election in Osun State, before the December 15, 2025.
The commissioner emphasized that the governor was smarter, resigning to prevent oppositions from using the PDP’s national division to file a court case against his nomination, which is a common tactic in the political landscape of NIgeria.
Supporters of the governor regret the move, stressing that the defection would not have been necessary had it been that the PDP is not fractionalised at the national level.
