Governors of 19 states and the Northern Traditional Leaders Council are currently holding an emergency summit in Kaduna to address the escalating security crisis that they warn is threatening the peace of the region.

The closed-door meeting, chaired by Gombe State Governor and Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF), Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, and co-chaired by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, id targeted at addressing the  surge of banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and herder clashes.

The meeting was organized to address the  severe escalation of violence across the North-Central and North-West regions, including the mass abduction of schoolgirls, and attacks on communities and places of worship in states like Niger, Kebbi, Kwara, and Kogi.

Addressing the forum, Governor Yahaya, stated that the North is battling currently battling with insecurity and poverty that threatens to destroy its social fabric and undermine its very existence.

At the top of the agenda is the demand for urgent constitutional changes, specifically the establishment of State Police. The leaders argue this decentralization of power is necessary to tackle the criminality that has displaced thousands and claimed hundreds of lives. The meeting aims to formulate a regional strategy to counter terrorists that have been operating with increased impunity.
