Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from his position with immediate effect, based on health grounds. The resignation was confirmed by the Presidency in a statement released late Monday, December 1, 2025.

President Bola Tinubu accepted the resignation and thanked Abubakar for his service. The departure of the Defence Minister comes days after President Tinubu declared a nationwide security emergency in response to the rise in abductions and terrorist activities across the country.

Abubakar, 63, a former two-term governor of Jigawa State, had served as Minister of Defence since August 2023.

Talks regarding a replacement is fueled by President Tinubu private meeting with the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa (retd.), earlier on Monday. Though the official purpose of the meeting was not disclosed, multiple sources suggest Musa is a strong contender to take over the role.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed that the process to appoint a successor is already underway and the President will likely communicate his choice to the Senate for confirmation later this week.
