Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has briefed President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa following his safe return from Guinea-Bissau, where he led an election monitoring mission that was disrupted by a military intervention.
Jonathan, who was trapped after military officers suspended the electoral process, returned on Thursday and subsequently met with President Tinubu on Saturday. During the briefing, the former President raised doubts about the nature of the takeover, emphasizing it was a deliberate ploy rather than a genuine coup d’état.
Jonathan, an election monitor and mediator for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), challenged the narrative surrounding the crisis, which saw borders closed and constitutional order suspended after two leading candidates both declared victory.
Jonathan dismissed the event as a ceremonial coup, suggesting it was orchestrated by the incumbent, President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, who was the first to announce his own arrest and the military takeover. Jonathan questioned the sincerity of the Guinea-Bissau President’s reports, stressing Embaló was using his phone to address media organizations while allegedly detained.
The former President charged the ECOWAS and the African Union (AU), to announce the results of the election, which he believes their officials possess, to resolve the political uncertainty that gave rise to the crisis.
Jonathan confirmed that he and his delegation, including Mohamed Chambas, were safely evacuated from Guinea-Bissau on Thursday via a special flight.
