Bandits attacked two villages in the Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State on Monday night, abducting several residents, including men, women and girls.
The armed group reportedly struck Sundu and Biresawa, a village along the Katsina-Kano border, between 11 p.m. and midnight. These communities have previously accused authorities in Katsina of indirectly enabling bandit attacks by entering into peace deals that provide criminal groups refuge across the state line. According to reports from a resident, the attackers, who were heavily armed, kidnapped an estimated eight people, comprising two males and six females.
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, and other leaders have recently sounded an alarm over the increasing infiltration of armed bandits into the local government areas situated close to the border of Kano State, including Tsanyawa and Shanono, emphasizing the need for stronger security presence.
The raid follows a similar incident just weeks ago where bandits abducted five women, including nursing mothers, in the nearby Yan Kwada village of Shanono LGA.
A resident whose family members were taken tells journalists about the attack;
They came on foot, armed with guns. They kidnapped my wife, Umma; my 17-year-old daughter, Fati; my brother’s wife and two other women. We tried to stop them, but our weapons were no match for them as they were carrying guns
The police have recently claimed successes in arresting bandit suspects, however, the scale of these cross-border attacks says otherwise.
