The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expelled several prominent figures, including Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, and former National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu. The motion for the expulsion was ratified during the party’s convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.
This action comes as the party attempts to resolve its protracted internal leadership crisis.
The motion for the expulsions was moved by Chief Olabode George, a former National Vice Chairman (South), and was seconded by Bauchi State PDP Chairman, Hon Samaila Burga, during the convention.
The list of expelled members includes several individuals linked to the dissenting faction, such as the party’s National Legal Adviser Adeyemi Ajibade SAN, Umar Bature, and Mao Ohabunwa, who chairs the faction’s Board of Trustees (BoT).
The expulsions were a direct consequence of the rift created by the Wike-backed PDP faction, which had rejected the Ibadan convention despite a court ruling allowing it to proceed. The faction’s BoT Chairman, Mao Ohabunwa, publicly dismissed the convention as a mere “jamboree”, and that they won’t tolerate flagrant abuse of the constitution.
Minister Wike, who transitioned to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) administration after the 2023 elections, has remained loyal to his faction’s supporters;
I will continue to support you people, I won’t betray you people
The leadership believes the expulsions are necessary to impose party discipline, consolidate control, and bring stability to the fractured party structure, allowing them to focus on their role as the opposition.
