The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has elected Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, as its new National Chairman.

Turaki secured the post after running unopposed, receiving 1,516 votes at the party’s National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Saturday. His emergence follows the party’s zoning arrangement, which reserved the national chairmanship for the North in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

‎Turaki’s election concludes a period of leadership vacuum and comes at a critical time as the PDP attempts to stabilize its structure following major internal conflicts and defections.

‎Turaki ran as the sole candidate after Lado Danmarke, the PDP’s 2023 governorship candidate in Katsina State, withdrew from the race. Despite his withdrawal, Danmarke still secured 275 votes. Turaki’s 1,516 votes secured his victory. Additionally, Solarin Sunday Adekunle was elected Deputy National Organising Secretary with 633 votes, while 17 other offices were uncontested.

‎The election adhered to the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) decision in August to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the South, by reserving the National Chairmanship for the North. Turaki was later adopted as a consensus candidate from the North-West region by northern stakeholders, including Governors Bala Mohammed, Caleb Mutfwang, Ahmadu Fintiri, and Dauda Lawal, among other key leaders.

‎The convention that elected Turaki also resulted in the expulsion of some key members like FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and former Governor Ayo Fayose.
