Violent protests erupted in Katsina State, after a series of deadly bandit attacks, resulting in the reported deaths of at least two protesters.

Residents of the Malumfashi Local Government Area blocked the major Katsina–Kano highway on Tuesday, protesting over the failure of the government to secure their communities. The demonstration was as a result of the bandit attack on Monday night in Danjanku community, which resulted in one death and the abduction of 17 people, bringing the total abductions in the area to over 30 in less than a week, despite an existing peace agreement. The protest, initially peaceful, turned violent when security personnel attempted to disperse the crowd.

The northern region of Nigeria, particularly states like Katsina, has been battling a prolonged insecurity crisis for close to a decade now. Armed groups, often referred to as bandits, routinely carry out kidnappings for ransom, cattle rustling, and deadly raids on rural communities, sacking thousands from their homes.

The recent attacks in Malumfashi, which according to residents is the third under a week, defiles the peace deals previously negotiated between state governments and the criminal groups.

The deaths of the two protesting protesters required an immediate, impartial investigation into the alleged use of lethal force against protesters in the state. The local and state governments face pressure to re-evaluate and enforce effective security strategies to protect communities and restore public confidence, as the current insecurity continues to threaten daily life and food production.
