A teacher at Soun High School in Oyo State, identified as Mr. Fatai Adegoke, has died after being brutally assaulted by a group of his students.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when Mr. Adegoke attempted to stop the students from gambling on the school premises during school hours. The confrontation quickly escalated into a violent attack, resulting in the teacher sustaining multiple injuries, including broken limbs, from which he later succumbed at a hospital. As at the time this report was published, the students involved in the assault are reportedly in hiding.

Incidents of violence perpetrated by students against teachers, or by parents responding to student discipline, is not a new occurrence. A similar incident occurred in 2023 in Delta State where a teacher died after being flogged by a student’s father.

The incident has triggered renewed calls from educators for stronger protection and accountability for student misconduct in schools nationwide.

‎A group of concerned educators who paid tribute to the deceased, condemned the act, stressing that it is not just an assault on one man but an attack on the teaching profession;

With deep pain and righteous indignation, we mourn the tragic and avoidable death of Mr Fatai Adegoke, a teacher who was attacked by his own students while trying to stop them from gambling during school hours. This horrifying act is not just an assault on one man; it is an attack on the entire teaching profession

This event is likely to force a review of security protocols in public schools across Nigeria by state education management bodies (TESCOM) and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).

‎While the students are reportedly evading arrest, their parents are also being called upon to be held accountable for the lack of discipline.
