Deputy Senate President demands apology from Trump over military threat

Deputy Senate President of Nigeria, Barau Jibrin, publicly demanded that U.S. President Donald Trump apologize to Nigeria for threatening military invasion and labeling the country a disgraced country.

Jibrin, speaking in a video on Friday, condemned Trump’s statements as offensive and undiplomatic, stating that the threat violated diplomatic norms and international law, despite Trump’s stated concerns over alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria.

The demand follows President Trump’s recent decision to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) due to allegations of severe religious persecution, specifically targeting Christians. Alongside this designation, Trump issued a direct threat to deploy U.S. military forces if the Nigerian government failed to stop the alleged targeted killings.

‎But for now, for the president of the United States to come in and say, ‘Oh, you are doing this and we are going to attack you, and Nigeria is a disgraced country’ , this is quite unacceptable – Jibrin

He further emphasized that Trump’s threat contradicted the American values he swore to uphold, stressing that no foreign leader holds the right to issue military threats without due process.

‎The Nigerian government maintains its position that the violence, while tragic, is a result of terrorism and criminality that affects all religious groups, not a targeted genocide against Christians. This denial forms the basis for rejecting the legitimacy of Trump’s threat and the CPC designation.
